Getting started

One of the hardest, yet most important parts in starting out is that you want to maintain a professional attitude to get good results. A lot of people stumble on the starting line by explaining to their customers that they’re new to the craft in an attempt to mitigate the risk of being called out as a bluff, but as I’ve explained earlier, this drastically reduces your influence and on top of that, your work will be under harsher reviews from your customers. Let them believe that you know what you’re doing and they won’t feel the need to examine the product as thoroughly by themselves. The product you’re selling is pictures that your customer considers superb, so you’ll just ruin your own product if you induce doubt to their minds. A picture is more about the feelings it arouse than what’s portrayed in it. Use that to your advantage.

What we’ll address next is charging customers real money without risking to deceiving them even though we’re just starting out, and how to get paid for learning. This is where the business model sweeps in to save you. What most photographers do is charging their customers on an hourly basis. On top of potential performance anxiety for you, this will also produce reluctant customers. They won’t know beforehand that they’ll feel compensated for what they’ve paid you. So steer clear from that path. Focus on selling your pictures instead of your time.

My usual arrangement is somewhere between $5 and $50 per picture depending on how many pictures I expect to sell, aiming for a grand total of about $100 per session when starting out in a new niche. Don’t worry though, we’ll learn to squeeze out more from each customer later on. Generally, a lower price will generate more revenue, as customers will then choose to buy more pictures per session, but remember that if what you’re shooting only looks good from one angle, you’re probably only getting one picture sold anyway. When you consider what you think your pictures are worth, don’t forget to factor in the time you’ll need for editing. Despite that you don’t charge for your time specifically, you’ll want your revenue to cover what you think your time is worth.

Clarify your price as you book your clients and they’ll understand what they’re getting in to, and make sure to leave a paper trail. Not because you’ll ever want to take a customer to court, as it’s nearly never worth the hassle, but if a customer forgets what price you’ve negotiated on the phone, they might misremember it as lower than you’ve agreed on and they’ll end up as a headache. If your deal is in written form, you can always refer to it and your customer likely won’t end up antagonising you.

Also, try making sure no customer spreads the word on your exact price. If you notice that sales come easy, you’ll want to increase what you charge later on, and that might be very hard to succeed with if you have a specific price already attached to your reputation.
